Speeding up scp transfers by using different cipher

Today i had to copy some huge files within my internal network. Some of those images for virtual machines had sizes up to 70 Gigabyte, which on our Gigabit network would have taken up to 90 Minutes.

This would have been a far too long transfer.

So i searched the net for some ideas and found, that by using different ciphers (which are less secure), things can go much faster. The less secure encryption was no problem for me as the image file was encrypted already and the file transfer was internal anyway.

By using a command like scp -c arcfour filename.img user@target:/ the transfer time went down from estimated 80 Minutes to only 15 Minutes!

Thought i share this here!
